Mauro Reggiani was one of the pioneers of abstract/concrete Italian painting, starting with his participation in 1934 in the first abstract exhibition with Bogliardi and Ghiringhelli, at the Galleria del Milione. The works on display in the present exhibition date precisely to those early years of experimentation: Composizione R3 was presented in the exhibition cited above, while in Composizione n.3 one notes the disappearance of the dark background in favour of a more clearly neoplastic structure, close to Northern European concretism. The Composizione of 1954 is instead a more mature work, where geometric rigour is softened in favour of a freer and more emotional image, clearly influenced by the changed European cultural climate of those years.
