«A butterfly in space excites my imagination: having freed myself from rhetoric, I lose myself in time and begin my holes». With these words, Fontana inaugurated one of the creative periods for which he is best known throughout the world. The works on display under the title Concetto Spaziale from the 1950s and 60s are an example of the project to literally surpass the limits of matter begun by the artist in 1947.
Fontana's varied creative activity is expressed through series of works that start from matter and then put it deeply in question (and example being the work Sirena con cavallo from 1938). This is the aspect of his work that offers the most stimulation with respect to the exhibition themes. Fontana's works, distinguished by their absolute minimalism, let rhythm emerge in all of its essentiality, colour in its singularity and the mark in its generative connotation. (LG)
